M. NANDAKUMAR
Spaces
For twelve transformative years, Calicut, Kerala's dynamic UNESCO City of Literature, has been the creative home for M. Nandakumar. His artistic consciousness was born in a small village in Sreekrishnapuram, Kerala, India, where the shifting greens of paddy fields and coconut groves became living metaphors for the complex emotional spectrum of life.
His formal education began in Kerala's rigorous government schools before progressing to prestigious private institutions, developing both academic discipline and creative thinking. When engineering studies took him to technical campuses, he carried with him this dual perspective—the engineer's precision merged with the writer's expansive vision. His professional journey with Wipro Technologies, Cats-Net, and Cybage spanned continents from India's metropolitan hubs to Tanzania's Dar-es-Salaam, and cosmopolitan landscapes on different continents. Each relocation brought new linguistic textures, cultural paradigms, and human stories that enriched his understanding of narrative possibilities. Currently working in technical documentation, he has mastered the art of conveying complex information with clarity, a skill that profoundly informs his literary practice.
Fictions
Nandakumar's literary career represents a sustained exploration of Malayalam's narrative potential across genres and forms. His four short story collections demonstrate progressive thematic and stylistic evolution: from "Vayillakkunnilappan" (Mouthless Hill God)'s vernacular realism to "Poochakalaude Theevandi" (The Train of Cats)'s glocal environment. Academic recognition came when universities included his stories in their syllabi, exposing new generations to his narrative techniques.
The novel form has allowed his most ambitious creative statements. "Nilavilikkunnilekkulla Kayattam" (Ascending the Hill of Scream) experiments with a storytelling pattern of folklore, while "Neerenkal Cheppedukal" (The Copperplate Documents of Neerenkal) reimagines historical fiction through postcolonial experiences. His magnum opus remains "Kalidasante Maranam" (Death of Kalidasa), where he resurrects the legendary Sanskrit poet to examine art's relationship with power—a theme with urgent contemporary resonance. The forthcoming English translation will introduce this work to global readers.
His collaborative shuffle-novel "Pranayam: 1024 Kurukkuvazhikal" (Love: 1024 Shortcuts) with Subha and poetry collection "Chennai: Vazhithettiyavarude Yathravivaranam" demonstrate genre versatility. The screen adaptation of the cyber-fiction "Varthali: Cyberspacil Oru Pranya Natakam (Kali, The Mother Goddess: A Love Play in Cyberspace)" as a film "Chitrasoothram (Image Threads)" by avant-garde director Vipin Vijay earned national awards and international festival screenings, proving his narratives' cross-medium viability. Critics particularly praised how the novella and the film captured cyberspace's disembodied intimacy years before the pandemic made virtual living universal.
Beyond creative writing, he maintains rigorous critical practice. His essays in print and online publications analyze intersections between literature, cinema, and scientific thought.
Travels
The creative journey of M. Nandakumar has moved through distinct phases—early writings followed by deliberate silence, then mature resurgence. That fallow period (2005-2015) became a crucial incubation, allowing him to develop the perceptual foundations that underpin current work. Emerging from this chrysalis stage, he found his voice transformed—more assured in its handling of complex themes, more innovative in formal experimentation.
At heart, he believes all writing constitutes a form of truth-seeking, however subjective or fragmentary. His novel "Death of Kalidasa" embodies this philosophy, using historical fiction to interrogate timeless questions about artistic integrity, political power, and human resilience. By reimagining the Gupta Empire's cultural politics through Kalidasa's struggles, he draws unsettling parallels with contemporary India's artistic challenges and the precarious position of truth-tellers. The central romance between Kalidasa and dancer Vanini serves as an emotional counterpoint to these weighty themes, reminding readers that love and beauty persist even in oppressive climates.
His creative process synthesizes wide-ranging influences—from classical Indian aesthetics to European modernist techniques, from ancient storytelling traditions to digital-age narrative forms. Regular engagement with visual arts, particularly the films of prominent directors and paintings of great Western and Indian masters, has refined his understanding of image-text dynamics. Scientific readings inform his thematic preoccupation with perception's slippery nature.
This interdisciplinary approach manifests in works like "Nashtakkanakkukarkku Oru Jeevitha Sahayi" (A User Manual for Losers), where he blends narrative practices beyond postmodernism with literary fiction to satirize India's neo-political culture. The story's protagonist, a failed rebel compiling an ironic "manual" from his misadventures, allowed him to explore how traditional storytelling adapts to post-truth realities. Such formal hybridity has become his signature, earning recognition from critics who note how his works "transcend colonial modernism's constraints to forge authentically contemporary Malayalam narrative modes."
